I'm practicing to be a sausage dog

It's summer in my part of the world and it's hot. How to beat the heat? I do my sausage dog stretches on the concrete floor.

Sausage dogs are very close to the ground. Their legs are even shorter than mine. They have long bodies.

So, if I do my sausage dog stretches, my body is longer and more of my tummy can be in contact with the concrete floor.

This means that I am getting more cool from the concrete.

Let me give you a science lesson.

A concrete floor is a dense heavy material so it has high thermal mass that allows it to absorb heat during the day when the temperature is higher. Then it releases the stored heat more slowly over time. So, the temperature of the concrete rises more gradually than the air temperature, meaning it doesn't heat up as quickly as lighter materials like wood or carpet.

At night, when the air cools down, the concrete gradually releases the heat it has stored, so it is cool again.

See, I'm not just a pretty face.

I did proper scientific experiments and tested lots of places around the house for the coolest spot to lie down.

The passage is no good because it has a rug.

The loungeroom is certainly no good. It has a flotaki rug which is like lying on the back of a sheep. (When I was a wee puppy and much littler than I am now, I could lie on the flotaki rug and disappear because we were both white with long hair.)

Lying on the bed isn't cool.

Bathroom floors are good because the tile floors have high thermal mass like concrete.

But I prefer the concrete floor because there is a good spot where I can keep an eye on the kitchen the back door, the dining table and the front door. I don’t want to miss out on the action.

Sausage dogs might look funny but they are built for comfort, certainly not for speed with those short little legs.
